I don’t know about you but I think it’s time we lightened up…

So how about this for a breezy little topic - When will Jews be forgiven the Holocaust?

I gave a lecture on that subject once, ‘borrowing’ the title from the philosopher John Gray who speculated 'that those who perform great acts of kindness are rarely forgiven.  The same is true of those who suffer irreparable wrongs.  When will Jews be forgiven the Holocaust?'

The question is rhetorical. 

When will Jews be forgiven the Holocaust? 

Never.

After the massacre of October 7, I feel the grim force of that finding as never before.

Rather than admit that their romanticisation of terrorists was flawed, rather than let pity leak into their unexamined detestation of Israel, rather than have to admit the burden of complicity and guilt, Anti-Zionists of all complexions turned their confused wrath inside out and blamed the victims for what had been done to them. The babies too? Yes, the babies too. ‘Death to Jews!’ the cry went up on streets and campuses, meaning more death to more Jews. Holocaust extenuation happened over decades; this grotesque inversion of every human instinct took place in a single day before our eyes…..
