So we like Joe and we respect him and we believe that his wisdom and his team have made the country better, but by his own admission he was meant to be the bridge to the next generation of Democratic leaders. Does he really believe that with his forgetfulness and fading energy he is so much better than Kamala or any of the other serious contenders for the position of leader? If so, then that is either breathtakingly arrogant or bad judgement and I think it is those qualities that are turning people off him rather than the bare facts of his age.
So wonderfully penned and very moving - and this might be the difficulty. It's actually about power and as the ancient Greeks tell us, hubris will fell him. He will always be better than Trump but is that good enough for the person leading the world in these dreadful times?
With Biden’s ego, he won’t go willingly. No matter his age. I care about the policies of his government. I don’t like them and will not vote for him. He has disrespected our military, enriched Russia and Iran funding both sides of the never ending wars. Maybe Biden will cancel our elections like his Zelensky did.
Forget sentiment and sentimentality. "Perception becomes reality," the adage teaches us. Too many people perceive Biden as he probably is. He is trailing in all seven "swing states" and cannot possibly win. Now that so many doubts have been raised (by representatives, senators; even Nancy Pelosi and now George Clooney), the die is cast. We must put aside emotions and look at cold, hard facts. For the good of the country and the planet, we need someone else. Either Biden steps aside, or Trump sweeps to power and becomes dictator-for-life (with the backing of the Extreme Court): end of discussion.
I was commensurating with my osteopathic doctor, who like me is in his late 70s, about accepting the reality of a loss of mobility and acuity as we age. “Yes, the weight of the years and gravity bow us all…” he said reverently as an expert on the inevitable effects of these forces on human physiology.
Egotistically we like to think we own or can control time, but its effects are cruel and relentless. We can either vainly struggle against time or gracefully dance with it. Time then changes from being a ‘noun’ to a ‘verb’ - timing. There is peace and joy that comes from being in sync and harmony with living and the wisdom of nature. It’s all in the timing, Joe…

I just want these two lines to stand out, and unlike Medium, Substack doesn't have highlighters:
"To ask for Biden to step down is to remember him as he was and conserve his past victories against the havoc wreaked by time."
"Even slurring his words at eighty-one he makes more sense than Trump ever did at forty. "
Honestly, I could highlight this whole post. I see why Substack doesn't give us a Medium highlighter!
